Shane Satterley on terrorism, religious extremism and radicalisation in Australia

The recent Western Sydney attack on an Assyrian Church Bishop reminded us that radicalisation and extremism are still present in Australia. These events come in all flavours, with the Wieambilla murder of several police a right wing religious terrorist event.

How should we think about such events?  And what can we do to prevent them?

We are lucky in the June 4th Tuesday meeting to have Shane Satterley address us on these issues.

Shane is a PhD Candidate at Griffith Business School in the Department of Government and International Relations.

He has a Bachelor of Security, Terrorism and Counter Terrorism from Murdoch University, a Master of Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism from Macquarie University and a Masters of Arts (Research) from Griffith University.

In his Master of Arts Shane evaluated selected counter radicalisation and deradicalisation programs in Western and Muslim-majority countries.

Shane has been named investigator on various research projects both domestically and internationally involving Department of Premier and Cabinet, Social Cohesion and Countering Violent Extremism and the United Nations Office in Geneva.

Shane also lectures on radicalisation, and counter radicalisation, and continues to consult government including the Queensland and New South Wales Police and the Australian Federal Police. More recently he has turned to related issues involving the problems that boys and men are facing.
